Top Issues Facing the Borough of Milltown
The Milltown Democratic Organization is committed to addressing and overcoming the issues facing our residents. Our members work hard to make a positive difference in our community to make Milltown the best place it can be.
Here are some of the main issues facing the Borough of Milltown. We welcome any concerned community members to get involved with our organization to help address these concerns the right way:
MAINTAIN A LOCAL POLICE PRESENCE
The first responsibility of government is the safety of its citizens.
HOLD THE LINE ON PROPERTY TAXES
We need a top to bottom review of where our tax dollars are being spent to ensure that they are being used most effectively. We will set budget projections in a realistic and responsible manner, pursue all available grant and municipal funding programs and initiate a comprehensive review of all current spending and expenses.
ENHANCE MILLTOWN’S UNIQUE QUALITY OF LIFE
We need to maintain and improve our parks, recreation, facilities, walkways and streets to provide our residents with a safe and beautiful community.
RESTORE PUBLIC CIVILITY AND RESPECT
Our government must work together for the greater good of Milltown as a whole.
IMPROVING COMMUNICATION WITH THE COMMUNITY
Not everyone can attend regular Council Meetings and many others do not have Channel 15.
ELECTRIC RATE INCREASE
The 70% electric utility rate increase of 2008 is unacceptable when the recommended increase was 34%.
We will recall the rate increase of 2008. We will achieve this by reviewing the spending and expenses of the
utility, develop a more reasonable rate basis and review any available funding which could possibly be applied to lower the rate. In addition, one of our first actions after being sworn-in will be to introduce an ordinance that permanently caps the increase of the utility rates to no more than the increase in the operating costs of the utility.
FORD AVENUE REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Redevelopment of the Ford Avenue sight is going to happen. All residents of Milltown agree that the sight cannot be permitted to remain as it is. Milltown can use this redevelopment to its advantage if resolved correctly. We will achieve this by working with the DEP and EPA in order to ensure that the environmental clean-up is sound. We will include retail business space as part of the project, which will create tax revenue and offset the increased burden on town services. We will introduce ordinances that will allow this project to be a positive revitalization that maintains Milltown's special small town charm.
